Hyderabad, Apr 7 (TNT) : Telangana Jagruti President and former BRS MP, K. Kavitha on Tuesday launched a sharp political attack on the BJP-led NDA Government , accusing it of attempting to dilute the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and undermine rural livelihoods.
In a statement, Kavitha alleged that the Centre was deliberately weakening the scheme by reclassifying it from an “Act” to a “programme,” thereby stripping it of its legal backing and enforceability.
Terming the move “anti-poor,” Kavitha said the change could deprive citizens of legal recourse if the scheme is curtailed in future, and described it as a “conspiracy” against rural workers.
She also cited a sharp decline in employment generation in Telangana, claiming that the number of workdays under the scheme had reduced from 14 crore in 2021–22 to around 7 crore in the previous year, impacting millions dependent on it.
Raising demands, she called for job security and legal recognition for Field Assistants, implementation of labour laws, and assurance of minimum wages for workers under the scheme.
Escalating the political attack, Kavitha questioned the silence of BJP MPs from Telangana and urged them to press the Centre for increased allocation and protection of rural employment guarantees.
The former BRS MP said weakening MGNREGA would directly affect the rural poor and called for safeguarding the scheme’s legal and financial strength.
