Hyderabad, Apr 7 (TNT): The Hyderabad-based Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) on Tuesday said that the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu) attained criticality on April 6 at 8:35 p.m., marking a key milestone in India’s nuclear power programme.
In a release, it said the criticality of the fully indigenised PFBR marks the commencement of the second stage of the Indian Nuclear Power Programme.
NFC , an industrial unit of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), stated that it has been associated with the PFBR project from its inception and has supplied structural components for fuel and other core sub-assemblies of the reactor.
These materials and components required for core assemblies have been manufactured at NFC to support both initial operations and future requirements.
In addition, NFC has manufactured and supplied long-length tubing for critical steam generators operating at high temperatures.
The organisation said the achievement underscores India’s self-reliance in manufacturing both core and out-of-core nuclear assemblies and components, strengthening the country’s indigenous capabilities in the nuclear energy sector.
