Hyderabad, Apr 5 (TNT): Telangana SC and ST Welfare Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar on Sunday announced that the state government will construct a 10-storey Ambedkar Tower near Tank Bund at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore, along with a modern hostel facility at Nimbolli Adda.
He said a Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram Bhavan will be built at Kachiguda at a cost of ₹30 crore, while a multi-storeyed Dr B. R. Ambedkar Knowledge Park will be developed at Lower Tank Bund.
Addressing a programme organised on the occasion of the 119th birth anniversary of Jagjivan Ram, the Minister said the state is moving forward on the path of equality, justice and self-respect inspired by the ideals of the leader, while reaffirming the Congress party’s commitment to Dalit dignity.
He said the celebrations should serve as a resolve to strengthen the Dalit self-respect movement rather than remain a mere ritual, adding that the government’s decision to celebrate the occasion on a grand scale reflects its commitment towards Dalits, the poor and marginalised sections.
Describing Jagjivan Ram as a towering leader who symbolised dignity and equality, Laxman Kumar said his struggle against caste discrimination continues to inspire generations.
He thanked Chief Minister **A. Revanth Reddy** for approving the projects and said the government is committed to prioritising Dalit development through transparent governance.
The Minister said steps are being taken to support Dalit students in higher education, including the establishment of special coaching centres for competitive examinations such as IAS, IPS and Group services. He added that focus is also being laid on employment generation, skill development and self-employment for youth.
Highlighting grassroots initiatives, he said special schemes are being implemented at the village level with emphasis on women’s empowerment and inclusive development.
“Congress believes that Dalit dignity matters more than Dalit votes. Under Congress rule, there is assurance, not fear,” he said, adding that the aim is to ensure development reaches the last person and build a discrimination-free Telangana.
Several leaders, including former Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, Ministers Vivek Venkataswamy and Damodar Rajanarsimha, MP Mallu Ravi, former MP V. Hanumantha Rao, MLC Addanki Dayakar Rao, and former IPS officer R. S. Praveen Kumar, among others, attended the event and paid tributes to Jagjivan Ram.
