Union Budget 2026 sets the Foundation for India’s Semiconductor Leadership: BITS Pilani Prof. Sanket Goel

Hyderabad, Feb 1 (TNT) : “The Union Budget 2026 marks a decisive shift in India’s semiconductor journey from consumption to design, manufacturing, and global leadership, said Prof. Sanket Goel, Chair Professor and Head, Center for Research Excellence in Semiconductor Technologies (CREST), BITS Pilani.
In a statement, Prof Goel while reacting over the Union budget presented by FM Sitharaman in the Lok Sabha on Sunday, Prof Goel said the announcement of ISM 2.0 is a timely and strategic move, placing strong emphasis on equipment, materials, and the development of full-stack Indian intellectual property. This approach targets the most critical and high-value segments of the semiconductor ecosystem and reinforces India’s push towards technological self-reliance.
The expansion of the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme to ₹40,000 crore, along with the proposed Rare Earth Corridors, strengthens the material and infrastructure backbone required for scalable microelectronics manufacturing, said Prof Goel.
Equally important is the push for industry-led training centres, which will help translate research excellence into manufacturing scale and position India as a globally competitive semiconductor hub, Prof Goel added.
