Union Budget 2026 tabled in Lok Sabha; FM Sitharaman scripts history with Ninth Straight Budget

New Delhi, Feb 1 (TNT): Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday presented the Union Budget 2026–27 in the Lok Sabha, creating history by delivering her ninth consecutive Union Budget.

Sitharaman has become the first Finance Minister in independent India to present nine budgets in a row, all since 2019 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

She also holds the record for the longest Budget speech in India’s parliamentary history.

In another first, the Union Budget was presented on a Sunday, a departure from tradition.

While government offices and regular markets remained closed, the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India held special trading sessions to enable real-time market reactions to the Budget proposals.

The Budget sets the government’s fiscal and economic agenda for FY27 and is being closely watched by industry, investors, and policymakers nationwide.
