Annamayya’s First Satakam a divine guide to devotion: Scholars

Tirupati, Mar 20 (TNT): The “First Satakam” of Tallapaka Annamacharya is a profound blend of devotion, philosophy and literary excellence, serving as a spiritual guide for devotees, scholars said at a literary symposium held here on Friday.
Speaking on the fifth day of symposiums being held as part of the 523rd death anniversary celebrations of Annamacharya at the Annamacharya Kalāmandiram, retired Telugu scholar Girija Manohar Babu said the Satakam brought the glory of Lord Venkateswara and the essence of devotion closer to people through simple Telugu.
He noted that Annamayya, regarded as the first vaggeyakara (composer-singer) in Telugu literature, used his compositions to convey deeper meanings of life and spirituality, while their musical richness continues to inspire devotion.
Manohar Babu also lauded the efforts of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) in preserving and promoting Annamacharya’s literary heritage and urged devotees to practice these compositions to experience spiritual bliss.
Later, literary scholar Venkata Shankara Bhavan spoke on “Annamayya’s Compositions – Vedantic Relevance,” highlighting that concepts such as the unity of the individual soul (jivatma) and the supreme soul (paramatma), illusion (maya), and ultimate truth are embedded in the saint’s works in a simple and accessible manner.
Researcher Rajashekar, speaking on “Annamayya’s Compositions – Krishna Philosophy,” said the compositions vividly portray the divine play of Lord Krishna, the devotion of the Gopikas and deeper spiritual insights, making them both devotional hymns and philosophical guides.
The programme was attended by Annamacharya Project Director Latha, other officials, devotees and literature enthusiasts.
