Hyderabad, Mar 3 (TNT) : Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Tuesday evening directed district Collectors to work more closely with people at the grassroots level, stating that the true purpose of an IAS position is fulfilled only when officers deliver meaningful service to the public.
Addressing a Collectors’ conference at the State Secretariat here, Revanth reddy said officers would continue in their positions only if they function effectively at the field level.
He instructed Collectors to spend at least 10 days every month touring their districts, asserting that without field visits, they would never fully understand public issues.
“Officials are the eyes and ears of the government. Collectors must act as a bridge between the government and the people,” he said.
The Chief Minister directed officials to involve public representatives in the “Praja Palana–Pragati Pranalika” programme scheduled from March 6 to June 12.
He asked Collectors to ensure that details of welfare schemes, including expenditure and beneficiary data village-wise, are read out in Gram Sabhas and effectively communicated to the public.
Highlighting education, he said there are 26,000 government schools in the state and instructed that one official be made responsible for monitoring the midday meal programme in each school. The designated officer must dine with students, while Collectors should have lunch in a government school at least once a week.
The CM warned that negligence in schools or recurrence of food poisoning incidents would not be tolerated.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the government’s objective is to provide quality education and nutritious food in government schools.
He also announced plans to establish Telangana Integrated Schools from nursery to Class XII in one mandal headquarters in each of the 100 constituencies, with all modern facilities, and sought a comprehensive report to move forward.
On healthcare, he said the government is spending substantially and plans to integrate all government hospitals with medical colleges in the future to improve services for the poor.
He cautioned Collectors to remain vigilant against outsourcing agencies creating bogus employment and warned of stringent action against such agencies.
The Chief Minister said Collectors are responsible for recovering paddy from millers and must act firmly against those involved in irregularities.
He also issued a stern warning against sand mafia and illegal mining activities, stating that failure to act strictly would result in immediate suspension of both the Collector and the Superintendent of Police concerned.
Stating that the government is closely monitoring officials’ performance, he said good work would be appreciated, while annual performance reports would form the basis for evaluation.
A review meeting on Collectors’ performance will be held again in June, he added.
