Maxivision introduces SMILE Pro laser vision correction technology in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Nov 2 (TNT): Maxivision Super Speciality Eye Hospitals on Monday introduced SMILE Pro (VISUMAX 800), an advanced laser vision correction technology, at its Somajiguda centre here, becoming the first corporate eye care chain in Telangana to offer the system.

Actor Nagarjuna Akkineni unveiled the technology in the presence of Maxivision Chairman Dr GSK Velu, Founder and Chief Mentor Dr Kasu Prasad Reddy, Chief Clinical Officer Dr Varun Malhotra, Senior Cataract and Glaucoma Surgeon at the Somajiguda centre Dr Anitha C Kamarthy and Chief Business Officer Ganesh Subramaniam.

The next-generation system enables minimally invasive vision correction through a small incision without creating a flap in the cornea. It is designed to correct refractive errors such as myopia and astigmatism in eligible patients.

The procedure involves less than 10 seconds of laser exposure and is associated with a shorter recovery period, the hospital said, adding that suitability would be determined through a comprehensive eye examination and clinical assessment.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Prasad Reddy said the introduction of the technology reflected the hospital chain’s focus on adopting advanced ophthalmic treatments and improving access to specialised eye care.

He said the equipment cost around Rs 8 crore.

Dr Varun Malhotra said the technology would strengthen the hospital’s clinical capabilities and expand treatment options for patients.

Explaining the procedure, Ganesh Subramaniam said SMILE Pro involved making an incision of about 2 mm through which a laser removes a small piece of corneal tissue, called a lenticule, to correct vision. Unlike conventional LASIK, it does not require the creation of a corneal flap.

He said the small incision was expected to heal within 24 to 48 hours and that recovery could take around three to four days, compared with three to four weeks for conventional LASIK.

Ganesh claimed that the procedure had an accuracy rate of 99.99999 per cent, compared with an effectiveness rate of 98.3 per cent for earlier procedures. He also said the technology reduced the risk of infection associated with conventional LASIK.

The equipment is manufactured by Germany-based Carl Zeiss and has been imported for use at Maxivision.

Maxivision provides specialised services in cataract, retina, glaucoma and cornea care.

The hospital chain operates more than 95 eye care facilities across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Gujarat and Maharashtra, and has treated over six million patients since its establishment in 1996, according to the company.
