Next 48 hours critical for girl injured in Rapthadu school chainsaw attack: AP Min. Lokesh

Bengaluru, Nov 1 (TNT): Andhra Pradesh Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh on Sunday said the next 48 hours would be critical for the recovery of a Class 10 student who suffered serious injuries in a chainsaw attack at a school in Rapthadu, and appealed to people to pray for her recovery.

After speaking to doctors at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, where the girl is undergoing treatment, Lokesh reviewed her health condition and the medical care being provided to her.

Recounting the incident, Lokesh said the attack took place around 10 am when a person entered the school premises carrying a chainsaw and attacked the student. On receiving information, he immediately alerted the police and district health authorities.

The girl was initially shifted to a government hospital, where doctors made efforts for nearly eight hours to stabilise her condition.

After she was fit for transfer, she was shifted to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru. Doctors performed a surgery lasting nearly 12 hours before moving her to the intensive care unit.

Describing the girl as “our daughter”, Lokesh appealed to people across Andhra Pradesh to support the family with their prayers during the difficult period.

Assuring the family of complete government support, he said the incident was extremely unfortunate and should not be politicised.

Ensuring her treatment, continued healthcare and rehabilitation was the responsibility of the government as well as his personal responsibility, he said.

Lokesh said the incident had underlined the need to strengthen existing safety systems and preventive measures.

The government was taking the matter seriously and would ensure that such incidents did not recur, he added.

Issuing a stern warning against harassment and indecent behaviour towards women, he said anyone indulging in such acts in Andhra Pradesh would face severe consequences.

He assured that strict action would be taken against all those responsible for the attack and nobody involved would be spared.
