HyD: GITAM hosts lecture on technology, mental health

Hyderabad, Oct 8 (TNT): GITAM Deemed to be University, Hyderabad, on Thursday organised a guest lecture on ‘Technology and Mental Health’, highlighting the need for students to adopt healthy digital habits and maintain a balance between technology use and mental well-being.

Delivering the Lecture organised by the Women Empowerment Cell of GITAM for students and faculty members, Dr Indrani Pramod Kelkar, Head–Quality and Analytics, TCSiON, Tata Consultancy Services, Hyderabad, explained that technology could be both a useful resource and a potential source of stress.

She highlighted its benefits, including access to mental health information, online counselling, peer support, learning resources and wellness applications, while cautioning against excessive screen time, social media use, digital overload, cyberbullying, social comparison and sleep disruption.

She said engineering and IT students were particularly vulnerable to stress and burnout due to demanding academic schedules, prolonged screen exposure and inadequate sleep.

Dr Kelkar encouraged students to develop healthy digital habits, practise mindful use of technology and maintain balance across the eight dimensions of wellness — intellectual, environmental, social, emotional, financial, spiritual, occupational and physical.

She urged students to use technology purposefully to enhance learning, productivity, creativity and resilience. The session concluded with a discussion on digital habits, digital detox and ways technology could better support mental health.

Dr Pritee Parwekar, Chairperson, Women Empowerment Cell, GITAM, convened the programme with the support of Cell members.
