Kakinada Collector felicitates medal-winning players

Kakinada, Oct 8 (TNT): Kakinada District Collector M N Harendhira Prasad on Thursday felicitated 79 players who won medals at the Amaravati Championships-2026 at a function held at the District Sports Authority office here.

The Collector distributed tracksuits and sports shoes to the medal-winning players and advised them to aim for participation in the Olympics instead of limiting their aspirations to the national level.

Harendhira Prasad said he was pleased to note that 386 boys and girls from the district participated in 12 sporting disciplines under the Under-17 and Under-23 categories at the Amaravati Championships.

He congratulated the Kakinada district Under-23 women’s teams for securing first place in kho-kho and hockey. The district also secured second place in the Under-17 girls’ category and second place in Under-17 boys’ basketball.

The district team secured three gold and three silver medals in weightlifting, besides one gold and one silver in chess and a silver medal in Under-23 boxing, he said.

Olympic medallist and noted hockey player K Rajini, who attended the programme as the guest of honour, appreciated the Collector’s efforts to encourage young athletes and players.

She said recognising and encouraging players from the village level could help produce athletes capable of achieving success at the national and international levels.

Such encouragement would also help nurture sporting talent in the district, she added.

District Sports Development Officer Satish Kumar said the Andhra Pradesh Sports Development Authority would provide cash prizes to 72 medal winners of the Amaravati Championships, with the amounts being directly credited to their bank accounts.
