CBI arrests WCL official for demanding Rs 50,000 bribe

Nagpur, Oct 1 (TNT): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior overseer (civil) of Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) in Umred, Maharashtra, for allegedly demanding a bribe in exchange for releasing payment against a work bill.

The accused, identified as Gokul Murpar, senior overseer (civil) in WCL’s Gokul Murpar Sub Area, allegedly demanded Rs 50,000, representing two per cent of a total bill amount of Rs 25.35 lakh, from a contractor for clearing the third bill for ongoing work, the agency said in a release on Wednesday.

The contract involved the construction of two borewells and installation of submersible pumps, along with internal mains and distribution pipelines for drinking water supply at the rehabilitation site of Pirwa village.

According to the CBI, it registered a case on September 30 following a complaint and laid a trap the same day.

\The accused was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting Rs 40,000.

The accused has been arrested, and further investigation is underway.
