EON Space Labs secures patent for miniaturised space imaging system MIRA
Hyderabad, Sept 29 (TNT): Hyderabad-based deeptech company EON Space Labs on Tuesday said it has secured a patent from the Indian Patent Office for its miniaturised telescope-based imaging system, MIRA, designed to deliver high-definition multispectral Earth observation imagery.
Weighing 502 grams, MIRA is integrated with TakeMe2Space’s MOI-1A satellite, scheduled for launch aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission on October 1, 2026, the company said in a release.
The company describes MOI-1A as India’s first orbital computing satellite.
The patent, titled “A Miniaturised Telescope-Based Imaging System”, strengthens EON Space Labs’ intellectual property portfolio in space-capable imaging technologies.
According to the company, MIRA is certified for space applications in accordance with NASA standards and is designed to support commercial Earth observation services across sectors, including agriculture, marine, mining, supply-chain management and insurance.
MIRA’s first orbital flight attempt took place in January aboard ISRO’s PSLV-C62 mission. However, an upper-stage anomaly prevented payload deployment.
The mission validated the system’s mechanical integration, spaceflight packaging and hardware readiness, the company said.
EON Space Labs is also preparing for another orbital deployment aboard ISRO’s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV).
Sanjay Kumar, co-founder of EON Space Labs, said the patent marked an important milestone in reducing dependence on imported optical imaging technologies.
The company aims to develop compact, high-performance systems to meet commercial and defence Earth observation requirements across space, aerial and ground-based applications, he added.
The patented technology also supports the company’s defence development initiatives under the Ministry of Defence’s Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) framework.
EON Space Labs is developing ultra-long-range electro-optical systems for the Indian Army and Indian Navy.
Using custom multilayer optical coatings and specialised materials that eliminate the need for germanium, the company is also developing Multisight, a handheld long-range defence surveillance system.
Punit Badeka, co-founder of EON Space Labs, said the patent aligned with the company’s long-term strategy of developing advanced technologies to strengthen self-reliance and create export opportunities in friendly countries.
EON Space Labs develops advanced electro-optical imaging systems for space, commercial and defence applications.
