Vikarabad, Feb 23 (TNT ): Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu on Monday said that the country’s deep-rooted problems would be resolved only if Rahul Gandhi becomes the Prime Minister, and called upon District Congress Committee (DCC) Presidents of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to work tirelessly to ensure maximum Lok Sabha seats for the party.
Delivering a speech on “Caste Issues and Reservations – How Congress Workers Should Fight to Eliminate Caste Discrimination” at the DCC Presidents’ Training Camp held here, Bhatti said Rahul Gandhi personally visits places where incidents of untouchability or caste discrimination occur.
Referring to the death of Rohith Vemula at Hyderabad Central University, he said Rahul Gandhi had visited the campus, interacted with students and supported the movement, while ensuring that the issue was treated as a social matter rather than politicised.
The Deputy CM said efforts were underway in Karnataka and Telangana to introduce legislation in the name of Rohith Vemula.
He stated that Rahul Gandhi had promised equitable distribution of resources and wealth before elections and that Congress governments were implementing welfare and development programmes accordingly.
He claimed that, for the first time since Independence, a caste census had been completed within 50 days and presented in the Legislative Assembly, where it received unanimous approval.
Alleging that the BJP was attempting to eliminate the Congress party, Bhatti Vikramarka said the party which led the freedom struggle and enacted laws aimed at ensuring economic, social and political equality was now being targeted under the slogan of a “Congress-free India.”
Accusing the BJP of attempting to weaken the Constitution, he said caste remained a social reality in India and shared that he had personally faced caste discrimination but continued his political journey with determination.
Recalling history, he said the Congress had taken up social reform movements alongside the freedom struggle, including campaigns against untouchability, child marriage and restrictions on widow remarriage.
He referred to resolutions and movements such as the Vaikom Satyagraha and the Mahad Satyagraha, and said abolition of untouchability was ensured through Article 17 of the Constitution after Independence.
The meeting was attended by PCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud, Dr. Vamshi Chander Reddy, AICC leaders Viswanathan, Sawant, Sachin Rao and other party leaders.
