SCR intensifies checks on water quality at stations, colonies, hospitals
Hyderabad, Sept 20 (TNT): South Central Railway (SCR) has intensified monitoring of water quality supplied at railway stations, colonies and hospitals, with regular testing being carried out as per the guidelines of the Indian Railways Medical Manual.
A team of supervisors and inspectors from the Railway Medical Department is conducting the checks, which are being monitored by railway officials, the SCR said in a release here on Sunday.
The water is being tested for residual chlorine, bacteriological contamination and chemical parameters.
Under the residual chlorine test, samples are checked daily at the source as well as the tail-end point of supply.
In case of an unfit sample, the concerned Senior Section Engineer (Water Works) is instructed to ensure proper chlorination.
Bacteriological analysis is conducted to detect the presence of E. coli and coliform bacteria.
Samples are collected once a month at major stations, colonies and hospitals and once in two months at minor stations and colonies.
Chemical analysis is conducted once every six months and whenever a new water source is introduced.
During the seven-day period from September 9 to 15, SCR collected 1,722 samples for residual chlorine testing, all of which were found fit.
Of the 145 samples collected for bacteriological analysis, 67 were found fit, while results of 78 were awaited. Six samples were collected for chemical analysis, with the results of all six awaited. No sample was reported as unfit during the period.
SCR General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava instructed officers and supervisors to remain vigilant and conduct frequent checks at regular intervals to ensure the quality of water supplied at railway stations, colonies and hospitals.
