1,277 undergraduate students receive degrees at IIT Roorkee convocation
Roorkee, September 19 (TNT): A total of 1,277 undergraduate students were conferred degrees at the first day of IIT Roorkee’s two-day Convocation 2026 on Saturday, with National Security Advisor Ajit Kumar Doval delivering the convocation address.
Chief of Defence Staff General N S Raja Subramani was the guest of honour at the ceremony, while former Solicitor General of India and IIT Roorkee Board of Governors Chairman Harish Salve presided over the event.
The graduating students received degrees in B.Arch, B.Tech, Integrated M.Tech, Integrated M.Sc., IDD, BS-MS and B.S. programmes. The recipients included 1,001 male and 276 female students, according to the institute.
The 2026 convocation is significant as IIT Roorkee is conferring its highest-ever 2,701 degrees over the two-day ceremony. The institute is also awarding the BS-MS degree for the first time under its five-year Dual Degree Programme.
Srivaradan Balaji, a student of BS-MS Chemical Sciences, received the President’s Gold Medal for securing the highest CGPA among undergraduate graduating students admitted through JEE (Advanced). Other medal recipients included Navneet Kumar, Aashi Jain, Roopam Taneja and Sukrit Jindal.
A highlight of the ceremony was the conferment of the Honoris Causa degree on Ajit Kumar Doval, recognising his distinguished public service.
Addressing the graduates, Doval said the challenges before India required young professionals and researchers who could think innovatively, act with integrity and contribute with a strong sense of purpose. He urged the students to use their knowledge and skills for the larger good of society and the nation.
General Raja Subramani said the progress of a nation depended greatly on the knowledge, capabilities and commitment of its young generation. He encouraged the graduates to pursue excellence while remaining conscious of their responsibilities towards society and the nation.
IIT Roorkee Director Prof K K Pant said the graduation of the students marked not merely the completion of their academic programmes but the beginning of a journey in which their knowledge, creativity and values could contribute to society and the nation.
The institute said it had filed 136 patent applications, secured 144 patent grants and supported the establishment of 11 faculty-led start-ups during the year.
The second day of the convocation will be held on September 20, when IIT Roorkee will confer postgraduate and PhD degrees on 1,424 students.
