Telangana Governor urges people to use eco-friendly Ganesha idols

Hyderabad, Sept 11 (TNT) : Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Friday appealed to people to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with devotion and environmental responsibility, urging them to use eco-friendly clay idols to prevent pollution of water bodies.

Extending his greetings to the people of Telangana and across the country on the occasion, the Governor called for collective efforts to ensure environmentally friendly celebrations.

As part of an initiative to promote eco-friendly festivities, Shukla, along with his wife Janaki Shukla, distributed clay Ganesha idols to Lok Bhavan officials and employees and members of the media at the Lok Bhavan premises here.

The Governor said idol installation and puja ceremonies would commence from September 14 and stressed the importance of protecting the environment during the festival.

He said clay idols, made from natural material, dissolve in water and help reduce the adverse impact of idol immersion on water bodies.

He appealed to people to avoid idols made of plaster of Paris (PoP) and those painted with chemical-based colours, as they can contribute to water pollution.

Shukla also urged the media to create wider public awareness about eco-friendly celebrations, water conservation and the need to prevent pollution during idol immersion.

He said concerted efforts by citizens and various stakeholders were essential to protect water bodies and ensure environmentally responsible Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

Joint Secretary to the Governor Komanduri Shashi Kiran Chary and others were present.
