Vedanta Power Highlights Resource Efficiency Measures on Akshay Urja Diwas
New Delhi, Aug 21 (TNT): Vedanta Power Limited on Friday highlighted its initiatives to improve energy and resource efficiency across its power operations, saying efficient use of fuel, water and other resources would complement India’s expansion of renewable energy.
India is targeting 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power capacity by 2030.
In a release, Vedanta Power said the transition would require not only increasing renewable generation but also improving resource efficiency across the wider power ecosystem.
The company said it is focusing on alternative fuel use, water optimisation, resource efficiency and circularity across its operations.
As part of its renewable energy integration efforts, Vedanta Power has adopted solar power for captive requirements and is electrifying its fleet through electric vehicles, reducing its dependence on conventional energy sources.
At the Talwandi Sabo Thermal Plant in Punjab, around 3.61 lakh metric tonnes of biomass were utilised during FY2025-26, accounting for approximately 5.21 per cent of total fuel consumption.
The initiative provides an alternative use for agricultural residue while enabling existing power infrastructure to utilise a supplementary non-conventional fuel source, the company said.
Water efficiency is another focus area. At Meenakshi Energy Limited in Andhra Pradesh, saline water is used for operational requirements, enabling the facility to achieve zero freshwater consumption, Vedanta Power said.
The company has also cumulatively planted 8.75 lakh trees across its operational locations to enhance green cover and support biodiversity.
“Akshay Urja Diwas is a celebration of India’s journey towards a cleaner energy future. As renewable energy expands, the opportunity is to make the entire energy ecosystem more efficient and resource-conscious,” Rajinder Singh Ahuja, Whole-Time Director and CEO, Vedanta Power Limited, said.
“At Vedanta Power, we are working to reduce the resource intensity of our operations through alternative fuels, greater water efficiency and circularity, while continuing to deliver reliable power,” he said.
Ahuja said improving efficiency across the wider power ecosystem was an important complement to the growth of renewable energy and India’s long-term energy transition goals.
The initiatives form part of the Vedanta Group’s broader decarbonisation efforts, under which the group invested more than USD 1 billion in FY2025-26 towards emissions reduction, resource efficiency and sustainable operating models, the company added.
