Telangana BC Commission seeks inclusion of 40 communities in Central OBC list

Hyderabad, Aug 11 (TNT): Telangana Backward Classes Commission Chairman G Niranjan on Tuesday  urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expedite the process of including 40 communities from the state in the Central Other Backward Classes (OBC) List.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Niranjan said the matter had been pending for a long time and needed to be resolved at the earliest, particularly in view of the upcoming Census 2027.

He said the issue was earlier brought to the Prime Minister’s notice on April 13, 2026.

Following an earlier representation, the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment had sought details of the 40 communities. Accordingly, the Telangana BC Commission forwarded the list to the Centre on July 18, 2026, he said.

In a letter dated August 3, 2026, the Director of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment stated that inclusion or exclusion of communities in the Central OBC List was carried out in accordance with Article 342A of the Constitution, Niranjan said.

He said some of the communities concerned were included in the Telangana State BC List as early as 2008, while the remaining communities had been awaiting inclusion in the Central OBC List since then.

The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) had conducted hearings on the issue in New Delhi on two occasions — from December 22 to 24, 2021, and on September 5, 2023 — but the matter had not yet reached a final resolution, he said.

Niranjan said the delay was depriving members of the 40 communities of OBC-related opportunities in admissions to Central Government educational institutions and recruitment to Central Government services.

He appealed to the Prime Minister to intervene and expedite completion of the process for inclusion of the 40 Telangana communities in the Central OBC List, saying the matter should be treated as urgent in the interest of social justice.
