KTR Warns of Major BRS Agitation Over Telangana’s River Water Rights
Hyderabad, Aug 8 (TNT): BRS working President K T Rama Rao (KTR) on Saturday warned that his party would launch a major agitation, on the lines of the Telangana movement, if the state’s legitimate rights over river waters were compromised.
Addressing the media at his residence in Nandi Nagar here, KTR questioned the Telangana government’s decision to accept the agenda of the upcoming Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) meeting and demanded that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy clarify whether the agenda had been accepted and whether they would attend the meeting.
He also sought to know what the state government proposed to present before the GRMB on behalf of Telangana.
Alleging that the meeting agenda was against Telangana’s interests, KTR said the government should explain how it proposed to safeguard the state’s water rights.
“If the government has any concern for Telangana, it should boycott the meeting,” he said.
KTR warned that the BRS would not remain a silent spectator if the Centre or any neighbouring state acted against Telangana’s interests in river-water matters. Any attempt to compromise the state’s water rights, he said, would trigger a powerful agitation in the state.
He alleged that the Congress government was compromising Telangana’s interests under the influence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
KTR also questioned the appointment of Adityanath Das as an advisor, asking why the government needed to depend on an individual whom he alleged was opposed to Telangana’s interests when the state had experienced engineers and water experts.
He accused the government of failing to protect Telangana’s irrigation interests while neighbouring states were drawing water from rivers and particularly referred to the Mahabubnagar and Palamuru region.
KTR said the BRS had fought for Telangana on the issues of water, funds and jobs and would continue to fight for the state’s interests.
