Kakinada: Students Stage Dharna Against Restrictions on Entry to Social Welfare Hostels
Kakinada, Aug 8 (TNT): Students affiliated to the SFI, along with leaders of KVPS and various Dalit associations, staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Saturday, demanding withdrawal of restrictions on the entry of student union leaders, Dalit organisations and media personnel into social welfare hostels.
The protesters raised slogans demanding repeal of the circular imposing restrictions on the entry of student unions, Dalit associations, people’s organisations and media representatives into the hostels.
Addressing the protesters, Joint Action Committee (JAC) leaders alleged that conditions in social welfare hostels were poor and claimed that inmates were being served food containing germs, besides being provided unhygienic drinking water and inadequate sanitation facilities.
They alleged that the circular restricting the entry of student union and Dalit association leaders and media personnel was aimed at preventing them from bringing the alleged poor conditions in the hostels to light.
The JAC leaders demanded immediate withdrawal of the circular and urged the authorities to allow student union leaders and media personnel to visit the hostels.
They also demanded that hostel mess charges be increased to Rs 3,000 in view of the rise in prices.
SFI district president Ch. Lovaraju, secretary Ganga Suribabu, KVPS district president Suresh Kumar and representatives of various Dalit associations participated in the dharna.
